Crestline 2021

Image
The COVID-19 Pandemic of 2020 had a significant impact on our recreational plans last year. At the beginning of the year, we excitedly looked forward to several excursions to interesting places. Of course our plans changed (as it did for so many people) as the virus swept on through. Many events were canceled, parks and recreation destinations were closed.  It's now the end of March, 2021 and some encouraging signs are pointing to a possible shift in the direction of the pandemic. Sandy and I are looking forward to the time that we can get our vaccinations.  [click on any image for a larger view] I had some vacation time that I could use, but where to go? In steps Sandy to the rescue with a great idea. Her first step was to contact her friend from college who used to live in a house "up in the mountains" at a place called Crestline. The house is currently unoccupied and could be an ideal getaway hideaway. So Sandy inquired about her idea.  We got approval from her friend

Geocaching Cammo Technique

The knowledge and skills to camouflage a geocache container is one of the top 10 things geocachers should develop.  There are MANY camouflage techniques that apply to different containers and situations, but perhaps the most versatile is the creative use of paint. I’ll share a process that I’ve used dozens of times to artistically, creatively and effectively camouflage a geocache container. I think you’ll be pleased with the results. I’ve received many positive comments on geocaches that I’ve placed where I’ve used this camouflage method. What you’ll need: A geocaching container: Larger containers will really show off this cool technique, but it can be used on smaller ones too. Spray Paint: Your choice here, but my preference is to use flat, matte finish paint that will last in the outdoor environment. I use a Rust-Oleum Camouflage paint. It is important that you use colors and shades that contrast, i.e. a light one and a dark one.  Masking Flora: Find some plants or local weeds that

Kayaking around Mission Bay

We love to get outdoors when we can. Living in San Diego provides a LOT of opportunities to do so. San Diego is nicknamed America's Finest City and with great weather, plenty of attractions and an enviable ocean-side location it’s hard to disagree. But forget the zoo and the themes parks, the US' eighth-largest city offers some less conventional opportunities for appreciating its fineness by ditching terra firma and taking to the skies and the water. On this day we did so at Mission Bay.   The main reason for our aquatic adventure this day was to put our new inflatable, 2 person kayak through its paces. We have owned another, larger, heavier 2 person kayak, but the thing is a beast. It is an inexpensive sit-on-top that moves like a barge and weighs close to one. But the main reason the inflatable was attractive was the transportation of the kayaks by car. Let me explain ... My favorite kayak is an orange, plastic, single sit-in kayak. BUT the dilemma we ran into was that we cou

Scooting over 30 miles around San Diego Bay

The bay, which is 12 miles long and 1 to 3 miles wide, is the third largest of the three large, protected natural bays on California's 840 miles of coastline. The highly urbanized land adjacent to the bay includes the city of San Diego (eighth-largest in the United States) and four other cities: National City, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach and Coronado. San Diego Bay is one of my favorite places to hang out. As you might expect for a large bay connected to a large metropolitan city, a major portion is a "working seaport", replete with cargo ships, air craft carriers and various warships. Still there are large parts of it that are well designed for recreation. Here's a link for more info on recreation at San Diego Bay Growing up in San Diego,
